A Practical Way to Hit the Reset Button on Life

Apr 14, 2024

Read time: 4 minutes

Sometimes, it would be nice if life had a universal remote control with a giant reset button at the top.

That would make everything so simple.

However, life just isn’t that simple, and quite frankly, that’s probably best.

Although hitting a physical reset button on life seems appealing, most people would misuse such an opportunity and fail to learn from their experiences.

Instead of dreaming about an unrealistic solution, I believe there is a much more practical way to approach resetting life.

So, if you feel like things aren’t going well or how you expected, then you’ll love my 5-step approach to resetting your life.

Let’s walk through it together.

When to hit the reset button?

Knowing when to hit the reset button is equally as important as knowing how to do it.

Here are a few clear indicators that something needs to shift:

(Hit reply and let me know if any of these hit home for you)

  • When your days blur together without a sense of purpose or fulfillment
  • When you find yourself longing for change but unsure where to start
  • When stress outweighs joy
  • When you have no work-life balance
  • When you have lost interest in things you love
  • When you’re not prioritizing your health (physically or mentally)

Additionally, persistent feelings of dissatisfaction with your circumstances, relationships, or personal growth can signal that it’s time for a fresh start.

My 5-step approach to resetting your life

Step 1: Acknowledge

Reflect on your current situation with honesty and openness. Identify areas of dissatisfaction and stagnation in your life. Be willing to confront uncomfortable truths about habits, relationships, or circumstances that need to change.

Step 2: Release

Let go of what no longer serves you. Declutter your physical space, mental clutter, and emotional baggage. Embrace the freedom that comes from releasing clutter, negative influences, and dead weight.

Will this be easy? Not at all, but as soon as you let go, you’ll feel lighter and ready to embrace a more intentional lifestyle.

Here’s how to get started:

1. There is no “right” way to declutter, but I believe my method is the simplest way to reduce your chances of feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. My framework is called The BANKS Method, and I walk you through it step-by-step in my course, The Decluttering Starter Kit.

2. Working through your mental and emotional clutter is not easy. This is why I wrote a free guide to get you started in the right direction. You can read it on my website here. My course will expand further and give you a roadmap.

Step 3: Express Gratitude

Cultivate an attitude of gratitude for the blessings in your life, both big and small. Take time each day to acknowledge and appreciate the positive aspects of your life, including:

  • Relationships
  • Experiences
  • Accomplishments
  • Possessions
  • Lessons Learned

Doing this is how you begin to foster a mindset of abundance and positivity. My favorite way to express gratitude is through journaling, as I haven’t found anything more effective at capturing honest feelings like this than writing.

However, expressing gratitude out loud is also a great practice, so don’t neglect this. There is power in the tongue, so how you speak to and about yourself matters.

Step 4: Define Goals

Clarify your intentions and define a clear set of goals that align with your values and priorities. Please take the time to identify what you want to achieve and why it’s important to you.

Feeling adrift in life can often stem from a lack of direction or purpose.

As I mentioned above, there are several indicators that something needs to shift, and it’s time to reset. Here are two that I want to reiterate:

  • When your days blur together without a sense of purpose or fulfillment
  • When you find yourself longing for change but unsure where to start

Setting specific and achievable goals creates a roadmap for the future. So consider what truly matters to you and why these objectives are essential.

Whether it’s advancing in your career (or pursuing a more meaningful career), nurturing relationships, fostering personal growth, or pursuing passions—defining your goals provides clarity.

If you skip this, you risk ending up back where you started—likely flustered and frustrated, dreaming about unrealistic solutions to resetting your life.

Step 5: Take Action

Commit to taking tangible steps toward your goals. Break them down into manageable tasks and take consistent action daily. Stay focused and resilient, adapting your approach as needed while maintaining forward momentum.

Follow these steps, and you will embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation that will undoubtedly give you the reset you’re looking for.

Your next steps

Spend some time this week tackling the first two steps I outlined above: Acknowledge and Release.

  1. Reflect on your current situation with honesty and openness. Identify areas of dissatisfaction and stagnation in your life. Be willing to confront uncomfortable truths about habits, relationships, or circumstances that need to change.
  2. Let go of what no longer serves you. Declutter your physical space, mental clutter, and emotional baggage.

Will this be easy? Not at all, but between this Newsletter, my YouTube channel, and The Decluttering Starter Kit, you’ll have the tools to feel lighter and embrace a more intentional lifestyle.

The only requirement is to journey through this process with patience and determination, knowing that these foundational steps will bring you closer to a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Good luck, and I’ll see you next week.
